IGAI, an external police oversight body, has the Mission of ensuring high level audit, inspection and control actions regarding all entities, services and bodies that are under the authority of, or whose activity is legally regulated by, the member of Government responsible for the area of Home Affairs.

IGAI is, since the beginning, a project of adherence to values and goals.

Its Vision identifies with the implementation of institutional and procedural solutions, enabling the best practices, in order to ensure an effective control in accordance with the defence of the fundamental rights of the citizen.

And that defence is the reason for being and the guiding motto for the existence and operation of IGAI.

IGAI, with complete independence and strict conformity to the law, performs a role, since the beginning of its operation, which is irreplaceable for the defence of the fundamental rights of all citizens.

I must emphasize in this statement the following basic points: independence, compliance with the law, defence of human rights.

This is the right way to characterize IGAI and its work. A work that has a course of several years, almost a quarter of century!

The work of IGAI, its importance for the safeguard of the fundamental rights and the way it has been carried out, is duly supported along the lines of the several documents it has produced.
